Kate Watson, Republican, is a career prosecutor serving her first term as Douglas County State’s Attorney. Prior to being elected, Kate started off her service to Douglas County in 1996 as an assistant state’s attorney managing primarily the traffic and misdemeanor call. Kate earned a promotion to the First Assistant State’s Attorney position in 1998, where her responsibilities expanded to include juvenile delinquency, abuse, neglect and dependency adjudications, truancy matters, and an increased emphasis on felony prosecutions involving victim crimes. With over two decades of prosecutorial experience, Kate has gained invaluable jury trial experience in cases including predatory criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion, aggravated battery of a child, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated driving under the influence, reckless homicide, possession with intent to deliver controlled substances and aggravated cruelty. Kate resides in Tuscola, with her husband John, a partner at Craig & Craig, a law firm with offices located in Mattoon and Mount Vernon. Kate has four children, Tommy, a sophomore enrolled in Parkland College, Anna, a freshman enrolled in North Dakota State University and twins, Jackie and Sidney, sophomores enrolled at Tuscola Community High School. Kate looks forward to serving Douglas County and making sure that the State’s Attorney’s Offices continues to be a well-run, professional office that can work effectively with local law enforcement agencies to keep our community safe.
